A presentation on: Mindfulness and Positive Art Therapy Practice

Guest Lecturer:
Patricia Isis Ph.D., LMHC, ATR-BC

More about her:
Having practiced almost 35 years in South Florida, USA her philosophy has both expanded and narrowed. She has been trained in the expressive therapies with an emphasis on art therapy for both her Masters and Ph.D. degrees. In the process of her training, Dr. Isis has continued to deepen her work through her mindfulness meditation practice and facilitation. In addition, she is very comfortable with the approach of Positive Psychology. In fact, recently she has written a chapter on Positive Art Therapy in "The Handbook of Art Therapy" published by Wiley/Blackwell and edited by Marcia Rosal, Ph.D. and David Gussack Ph.D., a comprehensive online textbook.

"Touching Moments: Mindfulness and Positive Art Therapy Practice"

More about the theme:
Mindfulness has exploded in America after appearing as the cover story of TIME Magazine just a few months ago. In 2000, Dr. Isis was fortunate enough to train with Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph. D.,  who is the father of Mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR). Due to the extensive research around this model, there is ample evidence of the profound healing effects of mindfulness. Dr. Kabat-Zinn's working definition of mindfulness is moment to moment awareness on purpose without judgment. Combined with art therapy, a mindfulness practitioner is engaged both in their own experience of the moment, while completely present for whoever they encounter. The possibilities are endless in terms of enhanced self and social awareness as well as meaningful community engagement.

The theory of Positive Psychology was developed just over 20 years ago by Dr. Martin Seligman of the University of Pennsylvania. The essence of this approach is to cultivate feelings of well being in oneself, in others, and within large systems. Through a positive lens, one looks at themselves and the world optimistically and with enthusiasm, zest, and strength.

The program will consist of both experiential and didactic components that will involve artmaking and processing.

We also welcome the team from the GEORGE WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY, USA’s ART THERAPY PROGRAM that will spend time with us on this day from 16H00.
